Lancaster University has been awarded five stars for overall performance in a prestigious new global QS rating.

The QS Stars rating system assesses universities against best practices, and was developed by leading higher education insight specialist QS Quacquarelli Symonds.

Lancaster’s QS Stars evaluation features five-star ratings for all seven individual categories – teaching, employability, internationalisation, research, facilities, subject ranking, and environmental impact.

The University achieves maximum scores in a range of measures that contribute to the individual categories, including overall student satisfaction, which supports the teaching assessment, and academic reputation, which features under research.

The rating for employability is bolstered by maximum marks for employer reputation, graduate employment and career service support, while the facilities evaluation includes maximum scores in sports and campus facilities, as well as student clubs and societies.

Having declared a climate emergency and announced its aim to become carbon neutral by 2035, the University also achieved maximum scores for its climate action plan and carbon footprint.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Andy Schofield said: “Achieving such high scores across a diverse range of categories is testament to the positive work underway right across the University.

“We can feel very proud of what Lancaster University offers to our students and our staff in helping them excel, as well as the positive difference we are making to the world.

“It’s a fantastic step forward as we work towards our vision of delivering the highest quality research, teaching and student experience, while engaging locally, nationally, and internationally.”

The new QS Stars rating follows Lancaster’s inclusion in the QS World University Rankings 2023, in which Lancaster is ranked 146th out of more than 1,000 universities.
