LETI: African Students Have Begun Training in Biomedicine and Computer Vision at LETI
On September 19, Saint Petersburg Electrotechnical University “LETI” held an opening of the engineering track of the “Summer University” project. Its participants were students and graduates of Russian universities from Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire, Zimbabwe, Djibouti, Tanzania, and Cameroon.
“This year, LETI is actively participating in the “Summer University” for different countries. As part of the program for African countries, we provide additional training for students and graduates of Russian universities in such fields as biomedicine and computer vision. It is important for us that our students acquire new competencies in their fields of knowledge and further transmit them to their countries.

The two-week Summer University program at LETI includes two educational tracks and one cultural and historical track. Within the “Biomedical Engineering” track, participants will learn about Arduino and MATLAB in developing mobile digital medicine systems, as well as applied machine learning in biomedicine, medical statistics, and predictive modeling. Lecturers will tell students about all stages of creating medical equipment: from the idea to the organization of sales and maintenance.
The students who chose the direction “Computer Vision: Hard, Soft” will get acquainted with the hardware, including sensors application and GPU programming, and software, including image processing and automatic analysis. The participants will also try to apply the acquired skills in real applications.
“This event is a serious step toward creating a Russian-African Network University, which will make it possible to identify promising directions and the most appropriate formats for organizing such programs. We invited students to LETI to show them what opportunities we can provide and give them additional knowledge. We are pleased that LETI is involved in the new initiatives of the Russian Government to promote Russian education, which allows us to demonstrate our capabilities and build a strategy of work in the long term.”

As part of the track “Fundamentals of Russian History and Culture in the Context of St. Petersburg,” educational seminars and tours of the city center, museums, parks, and palaces will be organized for international students.
The project “Summer University” is implemented as part of a consortium of the Russian-African Network University (RAFU) at 10 universities in Moscow, St. Petersburg, the Republic of Crimea, Rostov-on-Don, and Astrakhan. More than one hundred students participate in the educational programs.
