LETI Summer Schools Welcomes International Students

On July 3, the International Students Office and the Russian Language Department of LETI started training sessions under the Russian language summer school programs. This is the first stage of summer schools in 2023. Sixteen students from Romania, Moldova, China, Algeria, Tanzania, and Nigeria take part in the schools.

On the first day of the program, the students did the necessary paperwork, were tested to determine their Russian language skills, and were divided into groups. They also learned more about the university and visited the exhibition of Professor Alexander Popov’s museum.

Two schools are available to participants in July: “Intensive Course of Russian for Beginners” and “Russian Language and Cultural Heritage of Russia.”

The first program will last one month and will provide students with the basic Russian language skills needed for tourists: reading signposts, addressing passers-by, and understanding their responses. Participants will develop basic pronunciation and reading skills, practice listening comprehension and vocabulary skills, and acquire basic knowledge of Russian grammar and a minimum vocabulary required for communication (around 500 words).

The second program, that is week-long, pays the most attention to the spoken Russian language. A considerable amount of learning sessions are held outdoors. Students are provided with guided tours and training sessions in the urban environment. In the course of such learning sessions, they get acquainted with Russian cultural heritage and immerse themselves in the Russian language.

“Once again, we are launching a series of summer schools at LETI. They will take place throughout July and August. Five programs are planned for participants with different levels of language proficiency and with different content. Despite all the difficulties, people from Africa, Europe, China, Latin America, and other parts of the world come to study with us. The summer schools aim to promote LETI in the world through the Russian language and the cultural heritage of Russia, which St. Petersburg and its surroundings are full of. It is a way of attracting students to the main programs and additional income for the university. We see that consistent work in this direction is yielding significant results”.

Renat Yalyshev, Head of the International Students Office

A cultural program and excursions to places of interest in St. Petersburg and its suburbs await all participants. The graduation ceremony will take place on 28 July.
