MNIT Jaipur organizes expert lecture by Prof. Jean Tirole, Nobel Laureate in Economic Sciences, on “Fighting the War against Climate Change”

Malaviya National Institute of Technology Jaipur (MNIT Jaipur) organized an expert lecture on “Fighting the war against climate change” on November 24, 2022, delivered by Nobel Laureate Prof. Jean Tirole, Toulouse 1 Capitole University, France. Prof. Tirole was invited for an academic visit to selected prestigious institutes in India in November 2022. MNIT Jaipur organized this lecture in collaboration with the Indo-French Center for the Promotion of Advanced Research (CEFIPRA), which strives to promote quality information exchange between the two nations. This lecture was live-streamed by the institute for a large interested audience, including faculty members and research scholars. Prof NP Padhy, Director MNIT Jaipur, mentioned that this was the first-ever visit of any Noble awardee in the institute and an excellent opportunity for all academicians and researchers to gain insight on pressing issues like climate change which is the most challenging issue of today’s times. Hd on the increased need for further insisted on the social responsibility of technical institutions to contribute towards sustainability. Various other dignitaries attended the event, including Mrs. Usha Sharma, Chief Secretary, Government of Rajasthan, Prof Nitin Seth, Director, CEFIPRA, and members from the French embassy.
Prof. Tirole won his Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 2014 for his extensive analysis of market power and regulations. His scholastic contribution to game theory, economics, and psychology is unsurpassed and has earned him numerous laurels and awards. He is associated with MIT as a distinguished visiting professor. He is also the honorary chairman of the JJ Laffont-Toulouse School of Economics Foundation (TSE). Apart from winning the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences, his significant achievements include the Yrjo Jahnsson Prize of the European Economic Association, the Gold Medal of the CNRS in 2007, and the BBVA Frontiers of Knowledge Award in Economics, Finance, and Management.
The invited lecture started with the felicitation of the honorary guest with a bouquet and Rajasthani Pagri. Prof. N.P. Padhy, Director MNIT, delivered a welcome address, insisting on continuing such academic deliberations and discussions for a profound understanding of the young generation. Prof. Nitin Seth, Director of CEFIPRA, detailed the center’s activities and ascribed the need for frequent interactions to foster the young mind. Further, the Hon’ble chief secretary, Ms. Usha Sharma, on behalf of the state, welcomed the initiative of organizing a lecture on climate change, one of the most pressing issues of the time.
In his expert address, Prof. Tirole referred to “Climate Change as a Timebomb”; if the issue is further procrastinated, it’ll lead to hazardous results. Prof. Tirole spoke at length on the depletion of resources and the resurgent need to contribute to sustaining the climate. He invoked all stakeholders’ contributions to avoid the appalling gloom that is imminent. He accounted the avarice, industrialization, and incessant exploitation for the present plight. The event ended with Prof. GS Dangayach proposing a formal vote of thanks to the guests and dignitaries.
