Nanjing University Hosts 7th Faculty and Staff Congress Alongside 3rd Session of the 18th Trade Union Congress

On May 26, the third meeting of the 7th Faculty and Staff Congress and the 18th Trade Union Congress of Nanjing University was held at Xianlin Campus. Tan Tianniu, Secretary of the Party Committee of Nanjing University and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Tan Zhemin, President of Nanjing University and Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, attended the meeting. Members of the Party and Government leadership team of Nanjing University and more than 300 representatives of the Faculty and Staff Congress, representatives of the Trade Union Congress, observers and special guests gathered together to work together to discuss the development of the university. The meeting was chaired by Chen Yunsong, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Nanjing University.

In his speech, Tan Tianniu pointed out that it is of great significance and promising to do a good job in the “two generations of conferences” in the new era. He put forward four opinions on the work of the “two generations of conferences”: First, focus on enhancing leadership and consolidating the ideological consensus of unity and progress. Persist in using Xi Jinping’s new era of socialism with Chinese characteristics to unite the heart and soul, and continue to promote the deepening and implementation of theoretical armed forces; keep in mind the “major issues of the country”, and continuously strengthen the political, advanced and mass nature of the “two generations of conferences”; deepen the cultural construction of faculty and staff, and strive to create a healthy, civilized, upbeat and full-member campus culture. Second, focus on enhancing organizational strength and gathering the tremendous power of unity and progress. Adhere to centering on the center and serving the overall situation, and promote the construction and reform of various teams of faculty and staff; vigorously promote the spirit of model workers, the spirit of labor, the spirit of craftsmen, the spirit of educators, and the spirit of scientists, and better stimulate the enthusiasm and creative potential of the majority of faculty and staff; strengthen the construction of teachers’ ethics and style, carry out various selections and commendations, and strive to create a good atmosphere of catching up with each other and learning from each other. Third, focus on enhancing service capabilities and creating a good environment for unity and progress. Adhere to going deep into the grassroots and the masses, firmly establish the idea of ​​​​putting teachers and students at the center; innovate working methods, and provide more diverse, inclusive, normalized, and precise services for faculty and staff; work hard on building mechanisms, strengthening functions, and increasing effectiveness, and build the Teachers’ Congress and the Trade Union to be more dynamic and strong, and strive to create a comfortable working and living environment for faculty and staff. Fourth, focus on strengthening self-construction and forging strong skills for unity and progress. Strengthen the construction of secondary teachers’ congresses, and continuously improve the grassroots democratic management mechanism; strengthen capacity building, learn and master the relevant policies and work requirements of the teachers’ congress and the trade union; strengthen system construction, standardize the various tasks of the “two congresses”; establish a performance assessment mechanism, and all representatives must actively perform their duties and play their roles.

Tan Tianniu emphasized that the faculty and staff congresses bear important missions and responsibilities in the development of the school. He hoped that all representatives would stand at the height of contributing to the construction and development of the school and serving the faculty and staff, closely focus on the goal and task of “following the laws of education, taking root in China, and accelerating the construction of a world-class Nanjing University with Chinese characteristics”, and with a strong sense of ownership and a high sense of responsibility and mission, further emancipate the mind, build consensus, bear in mind the instructions, be grateful and forge ahead, and jointly build the “Nanjing University soul” of the new era, cultivate the “Nanjing University people” of the new era, contribute the “Nanjing University strength” of the new era, and protect the “Nanjing University roots” of the past 120 years, so as to accelerate the construction of the “first Nanjing University” that the Party can rest assured, the people can be satisfied, and all Nanjing University people can be proud of. The school party committee will continue to fully support the work of the trade union and the “two congresses” as always, and actively help faculty and staff solve practical difficulties and problems.

Tan Zhemin delivered a report on the school’s work with the theme of “Working hard to promote development and working together to forge ahead”. He reviewed the basic situation of the school’s development in the past year from nine aspects: first, strengthening ideological guidance, planning and layout to start a new journey; second, consolidating talent training, and achieving results in moral education; third, optimizing discipline layout, and highlighting discipline construction; fourth, strengthening team building, and making progress in talent work; fifth, focusing on scientific research to serve the country, and working together to overcome difficulties and achieve fruitful results; sixth, deepening foreign cooperation, and making breakthroughs in open education; seventh, accelerating the construction of Suzhou campus, and the school and the local government work together to promote development; eighth, improving the governance system, and improving governance capabilities; ninth, improving support and guarantee, and optimizing people’s livelihood services. Tan Zhemin said that these achievements were the result of the concerted efforts and common progress of all NDU people. On behalf of the school, he expressed his heartfelt thanks and high respect to all faculty and staff of NDU.

Tan Zhemin emphasized that this year marks the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, a critical year for the full completion of the goals and tasks of the “14th Five-Year Plan”, and a tough year for Nanjing University to make new breakthroughs in promoting the “Forging Ahead”. At present, the university is in a tough period of building a world-class university with Chinese characteristics, an opportunity period of serving the country’s major strategic needs, and an improvement period of innovation-driven connotative high-quality development. It is urgent for all Nanjing University people to be of one mind and concentrate their efforts. It is even more necessary for the Faculty and Staff Congress to fully play the role of bridge and link, unite and lead the faculty and staff to unify their thoughts, resolutely shoulder the glorious mission of establishing morality and cultivating people and serving the country, and continue to write a new chapter of Nanjing University’s forging ahead. We must take this Faculty and Staff Congress as an opportunity to unite more closely around the Party Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping as the core, and with the spirit of hard work and a sense of mission to be at the forefront, jointly create a new situation in the construction of a world-class Nanjing University with Chinese characteristics, and make new and greater contributions to the great cause of accelerating the construction of an educational power and comprehensively promoting the construction of a strong country and national rejuvenation with Chinese-style modernization.

Vice President Lu Yanqing made a report on the school’s financial work and introduced the school’s financial management in 2023. He pointed out that in 2024, financial work will continue to be guided by the “Action forge ahead”, thoroughly implement the work requirements of the “Year of Improving Management Quality and Efficiency”, based on the actual situation of the department, actively change thinking, and carry out in-depth work around resource expansion, budget management, financial analysis, accounting supervision, smart finance, financial services, etc., to help the school’s high-quality development.

Bian Jianbo, Secretary General of the Executive Committee of the Teachers’ Congress and Chairman of the Trade Union, delivered a work report on the Teachers’ Congress and the Trade Union. He said that the school’s Teachers’ Congress and the Trade Union will continue to firmly grasp the correct direction, strengthen their beliefs, and educate people with a united heart, gather strength and make achievements around the school’s central work, focus on the main responsibilities and main business of the trade union, continue to forge ahead and serve wholeheartedly, and uphold a good style of work to work hard and add vitality.

Wen Yu, member of the Proposal Working Committee of the Faculty Congress and Executive Deputy Director of the Office of Nanjing University, made a report on the proposal work, introducing the summary and handling of proposals for the second meeting of the Seventh Faculty Congress, as well as the collection of proposals for the third meeting of the Seventh Faculty Congress. He hoped that the representatives would further enhance their awareness of the overall situation, fully stimulate the subjective initiative of teachers, students and staff, and gather a strong force to promote the construction of the “First Nanjing University”.

The meeting added members to the Executive Committee of the 7th Faculty Congress and the 18th Trade Union Committee of Nanjing University.

The delegates reviewed four work reports in groups, reported on the collection of proposals, and discussed and made suggestions on the school’s central work and issues of general concern to faculty and staff. At the summary meeting, Wang Jianfu, secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Social Sciences, Gao Fang, secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Foreign Languages, Wang Jianhua, secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Marxism, Liu Gongxiang, secretary of the Party Committee of the Department of Mathematics, Zhu Chengjian, secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Yin Xingbo, secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Architecture and Urban Planning, Ji Yong, secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Life Sciences, Wu Gangshan, secretary of the Party Committee of the Department of Computer Science and Technology, Sun Tao, director of the Modern Analysis Center, and Shi Hongmei, secretary of the Party Committee of the School of Art, reported on the discussion and deliberation of each group as representatives, and put forward opinions and suggestions on matters such as talent training, discipline construction, team building, resource expansion, people’s livelihood services, and campus construction. They expressed the hope to better gather the wisdom and strength of NTU faculty and staff, and better unite all NTU faculty and staff to write a new chapter of “NTU-style progress”.

After the plenary session, the second plenary session of the 18th Trade Union Committee and the second plenary session of the 7th Teachers’ Congress Executive Committee were held. Tang Shaoqiu was elected Chairman of the 18th Trade Union Committee. Chen Yunsong was elected Director of the 7th Teachers’ Congress Executive Committee, Tang Shaoqiu was elected Deputy Director and Secretary-General of the 7th Teachers’ Congress Executive Committee, and Wen Yu was elected Deputy Director of the Proposal Committee of the 7th Teachers’ Congress Executive Committee.
