National Oral Hygiene Day at ZADC

Aligarh : Dentists and students of the Department of Periodontics and Community Dentistry, Dr Z A Dental College (ZADC), Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) marked the ‘National Oral Hygiene Day’ with a ‘Pit and Fissure Sealant’ programme and an Oral Health Awareness and Treatment Camp at the Ahmadi School for the Visually Challenged.

Inaugurating the free ‘Pit and Fissure Sealant’ programme, Prof R K Tiwari (Principal, ZADC) said: “The Oral Hygiene Day is observed to spread the message of oral health and its importance and to curb the worrisome trend of neglect which has been one of the main causes for dental diseases. The ‘Pit and Fissure Sealant’ programme is for people of all ages, but there is a special focus on pediatric age groups”.

Most people will be amazed to know that various oral health conditions including tooth decay, gum diseases and even oral cancers can be prevented by simply maintaining oral hygiene; he added.

Meanwhile at the Oral Health Awareness and Treatment Camp at Ahmadi School, students were provided with free dental check-ups and recommended for further dental treatments on need basis.

“In the camp, consultants and interns screened 46 individuals and diagnosed 28 students with oral health issues like dental caries due to poor oral hygiene. Consented manual scaling was also performed on five patients and oral hygiene instructions were given verbally”, said Prof Neha Agrawal.

In the concluding remarks, Prof Vivek Kumar Sharma (Chairman, Department of Periodontics and Community Dentistry) explained to the patients how oral diseases such as tooth decay, dental caries and gum diseases, can impact various aspects of life.

He encouraged the Ahmadi School students to practice good oral hygiene.
