Parents’ support group meeting on International Epilepsy Day

ALIGARH : The District Early Intervention Centre and Centre of Excellence (DEIC-COE), JN Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University organized a training programme for the medical officers associated with the Rashtriya Baal Swasthya Karyakaram, and National Health Mission of various blocks of Aligarh district, and also held a Parents’ Support Group meeting for the parents of children with Epilepsy, to mark the International Epilepsy Day.

The main focus of the training was to orient the medical officers toward the needs of children with Epilepsy and to emphasize the meticulous evaluation and timely management of the condition. The two events were carried out under the guidance of Prof. Tabassum Shahab, Ex-Convener, DEIC-COE, Prof. Kamran Afzal, Convener, DEIC-COE and Dr. Uzma Firdaus, Nodal Officer, DEIC-COE.

Prof. Veena Maheshwari, Dean, Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Rakesh Bhargava, Principal and CMS, JNMCH, Prof. Haris M. Khan, Medical Superintendent and Mr. Monazir Hussain, DEIC Manager, Aligarh attended the programme as distinguished guests, who later gave away certificate of participation to the medical officers and prizes to the parents and children with epilepsy.

A total of 20 Medical Officers participated in the training. The deliberations included a discussion on the Identification and management of Epilepsy, Psychosocial aspects of Management of Epilepsy and Cognitive Stimulation, and Retention and Maintenance of Learning in Children with Epilepsy. These sessions were taken by Dr. Sanjeeda Noor, Medical Officer, Dr. Firdos Jahan, Clinical Psychologist, and Dr. Mohd. Naushad, Special Educator Cum Early Interventionist, DEIC-COE, respectively.

The Parents Support Group meeting addressed the concerns of the parents and educated parents regarding various aspects of epilepsy management. Dr. Navedur Rehman, Dental Surgeon, DEIC-COE, Mrs. Nusrat Jahan, Physiotherapist, DEIC-COE and Mrs. Anam Khalid, Pediatric Optometrist interacted with the parent’s group and educated them about the condition of their children and cleared the myths and doubts.

The interns at DEIC presented a brief educational skit covering different aspects of epilepsy. A drawing competition for the children affected with epilepsy was also conducted.
