Prof Santosh Nath’s Demise Condoled
Aligarh : Faculty members, students and staff members of the Department of English, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) mourned the sad demise of Professor Mrs Santosh Nath, former faculty member of the Department, who died in the USA a few days ago of ventricular arrhythmia.
In a condolence meeting, Prof Mohammad Asim Siddiqui, Chairman of the Department, read the condolence message, describing her achievements and offering deep-felt condolences to her family members and friends.
Professor Siddiqui remembered Mrs Nath as his teacher in BA first year in 1980 and later as his colleague in the Department. “She taught The Art of Essayist, a prescribed text for English Main students, with great enthusiasm”, recalled Professor Siddiqui.
Dr Raihan Raza remembered her as a very helpful colleague, a punctual person and a committed teacher ready to teach anything. Professor Sami Rafiq remembered how Mrs Nath encouraged and motivated her when she published her first collection of poems immediately after her Master’s. Prof Nuzhat Zeba recalled Mrs Nath as a very warm person.
Daughter of Mr C.S. Bhatnagar, Mrs Santosh Nath was born on 15th November 1934 in Mathura, Uttar Pradesh. Her husband Prof Kailash Nath was a Professor of Ophthalmology and Director of the Ophthalmology Section of AMU at Gandhi Eye Hospital.
Professor Mrs Santosh Nath did her Master’s in English from Agra University. She joined the Department of English as a lecturer on 17th July 1967 and retired on November 14, 1994.
During her long academic career, Professor Nath served the department in various capacities. She wrote a book titled ‘Treatment of Greek Mythology in the poems of Tennyson’. She also did a Post graduate Diploma in Applied Linguistics at the University of Reading, UK, after taking leave from the University.
Professor Nath was a popular teacher among her students and a caring colleague. She had been living in the United States of America after her retirement.
She is survived by her brother Manish Kumar, sister Prakash Rao, son Mr Rattan Nath, daughter Mrs Jyotsna Nair and grandchildren Nihaal Nath, Ursula Nath, Ajay Nair and Sachin Nair.
