Resource talk organized
ALIGARH : Mr. Sascha Deboni, a research scholar from the Universität Zürich, Switzerland delivered a talk on “Goethe’s Leiden des Jungen Werther: A Contemporary Reading”, organized by the Department of Foreign Languages, Aligarh Muslim University. He discussed various literary nuances touched by the distinguished author Johann Wolfgang Goethe in his famous novel, “Die Leiden des jungen Werther” (The Sorrows of Young Werther).
Sascha said the novel still has a fascinating effect because of its aesthetic beauty and emotional appeal. It is said that Napoleon Bonaparte was a great admirer of the novel and had apparently read it several times. He even discussed this work with Goethe when they met in 1808.
In his presidential remarks, Prof. Jawaid Iqbal (Dean, Faculty of International Studies and Chairman, Department of Foreign Languages) said it is surprising to see that a literary work written in 1774 is still read, discussed and celebrated by German literature enthusiasts, with extraordinary zeal.
Earlier, Mr. Syed Salman Abbas welcomed the guest speaker while Dr. Shiv Prakash Yadav moderated the programme and Dr. Subair PM proposed a vote of thanks.
Mohammad Intizar, a postgraduate student in the department, introduced the author and the novel.
