Seminar “Development of functional literacy of students in mathematics lessons”
On December 22, at the Department of Theory and Methods of Teaching Mathematics and ICT in Education of the Institute of Mathematics and Information Technologies, a scientific and methodological seminar “Development of functional literacy of students in mathematics lessons” was held on the Zoom platform.
The participants discussed the actual problem today – the formation of functional literacy of students. Domestic and international comparative studies in the field of education show that Russian schoolchildren, possessing a sufficiently high level of mastering the content of mathematics education, demonstrate a low level of application of the knowledge acquired at school in situations that differ from educational ones taken from real life. The low level of functional literacy of the younger generation makes it difficult for them to adapt in society.
As part of the scientific and methodological seminar, the senior methodologist of the General Education Department of the Karelian Institute for the Development of Education Irina Vladimirovna Soboleva made a presentation. The speaker focused on the teacher’s work on the development of functional literacy of students (mathematical and reading) in specific mathematics lessons.
Irina Vladimirovna talked about the key directions of the formation of skills in working with text, introduced specific methods of developing the skill of semantic reading in mathematics lessons, demonstrated a system of exercises from various textbooks aimed at developing reading and mathematical literacy, shared her personal experience in compiling competence-oriented tasks and methods of work above them. After the speech, a discussion of the problem took place.
The seminar was attended by employees of the Department of Theory and Methods of Teaching Mathematics and ICT in Education: T.V. Bezhanu, V.V. Kyurshunova, S.I. Markova, A.V. Radionova, G.N. Kagacheva, students of the direction of training bachelors “Pedagogical education (profiles” Mathematics and Informatics “) of the Institute of Mathematics and Information Technologies. Teachers of mathematics and informatics of the MOU” Lyceum No. 40 “were also invited to participate in the seminar as part of the work of the basic department of mathematics and informatics.
