Science and sport are not a contradictory combination. And here is the evidence — there are 11 sections at the 1st International Scientific-Practical Conference on Physical Education, Sports and Tourism titled World University Games: History, Modernity and Development Trends, which began its work at SibFU on September 16, on the eve of the International University Sports Day.

The fact that the conference is in Krasnoyarsk is good for several reasons, explained by SibFU’s rector Maksim Rumiantsev. “Firstly, this is the first conference. Secondly, policy in the field of mass youth sports is accepted by the University as one of the priorities and is a strategic guideline in the University’s development program. And thirdly, we are supported by both the founder (the Ministry for Higher Education and Science) and the Ministry for Sports of the Russian Federation. It was decided that a university sports centre will be established on the basis of SibFU, the Ministry for Sports of Russia takes an active position here, and we, as beneficiaries of the Winter University Games 2019, hope that this sports unit, which will be created on the basis of our university, will become a model for other universities in Russia,” said Maksim Rumiantsev.

“Quite recently, in 2019, we gained unique administrative and organizational experience in hosting the Winter University Games, and it is logical that we are now setting the sports matters into the research domain. This approach will lead to success in the development of sports not only in the region, but also in Russia” noted Sergey Borodavkin, Deputy Minister of Sports of Krasnoyarsk Territory.

The first plenary presentation, which was made by Sergey Seyranov, president of the Russian Student Sports Union, rector of the Russian State University of Physical Education, Sport, Youth and Tourism (SCOLIPE), fully corresponded to the theme of the conference and outlined the history of the World University Games and the prospects for their development.

Mr. Seyranov noted that student sports, to a certain extent, give impetus to Olympic sports — “It was after Summer Student Games in Moscow in 1973 — the first in our country – when the Government made the decision to hold the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow. I hope that the restoration of good international relations will begin with university sports. There is no one better than students to unite the world. The future of the planet is in their hands,” Sergey Seyranov concluded optimistically.

The President of the Russian Student Sports Union said that despite the FISU’s decision not to hold international student competitions in Russia, first of all, the Summer University Games 2023 in Yekaterinburg, the sports festival will take place in the capital of the Urals. It has already been decided that this will be an International University Sports Festival, where university teams from the BRICS, SCO and CIS countries will take part. The competitions will be held in 16 sports and expect 5 thousand participants from 70 universities of the world competing for 191 sets of medals.

In his presentation, Mr. Seyranov also told that the film “Together”, dedicated to 30th anniversary of the Russian Student Sports Union, is at its final stage and shared the soundtrack to this project.

“In the professional community we need to discuss many issues of student sports, the organization of the education process, the reform of the discipline of Physical Education, and the content of sports training. Not to mention the organizational issues – whom to unite with so that the international agenda does not go astray. After the Conference, it is planned to adopt a resolution, which in the future can be used as a setting for various sports organizations and universities,” Alexander Bliznevsky, director of the School of Physical Education, Sport and Tourism, said commenting the Conference.
