Sri Sivasubramaniya Nadar College of Engineering Sets New Benchmark as Tamil Nadu’s First Engineering Institution to Earn Platinum Green Campus Certification

 

Chennai: Sri Sivasubramaniya Nadar College of Engineering (SSN) in Chennai, ranked among the top private engineering colleges in India (NIRF 2023), received a Green Campus – Platinum Certification today. Meeting the stringent green building standards of the CII-IGBC Green Campus Rating System, Sri Sivasubramaniya Nadar College of Engineering is the state’s first engineering institution to earn this prestigious distinction. This recognition highlights the institution’s efforts in fostering a sustainable ecosystem.

The CII-IGBC Green Campus – Platinum Award plaque was presented to Dr Kala Vijayakumar, President, Sri Sivasubramaniya Nadar College of Engineering by Mr. Ajit Kumar Chordia, MD, Olympia Group and the Chairman of CII-IGBC Chennai Chapter along with the Co-Chair, Mr. Mahesh S. Anand, President – Nippon Paint (India) Private Limited (Decorative Division) today in the Sri Sivasubramaniya Nadar College of Engineering Campus at Kalavakkam on OMR.

Speaking on the occasion Dr Kala Vijayakumar, President, Sri Sivasubramaniya Nadar College of Engineering said, “The IGBC Green Campus Award is a tremendous honor and a testament to Sri Sivasubramaniya Nadar College of Engineering’s unwavering commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. It reaffirms our dedication to creating a greener and healthier campus for our students, faculty and staff. Over 60% of the of the college grounds have been transformed into lush green belts, adorned with over 24,000 trees and a captivating herbal butterfly garden. The campus serves as a habitat for an impressive 450 distinct species of flora and fauna, contributing to biodiversity conservation. We will continue to push the boundaries of eco-friendly practices and inspire positive change in our community and beyond. Mr Mahesh Anand, Co-Chair, IGBC Chennai Chapter urged all the students and staffs to learn ways to lead an environment-friendly lifestyle by reducing one’s individual carbon footprint and take Green Building Movement further.

Sri Sivasubramaniya Nadar College of Engineering received this IGBC Platinum certification after implementing a multitude of initiatives on campus. To further reduce its ecological footprint, Sri Sivasubramaniya Nadar College of Engineering has a 1.3 megawatts (MW) solar plant whose output caters to over 75% of the campus’ annual energy requirements. The campus takes waste management seriously as well. As a Zero Liquid Discharge campus, every drop of wastewater is processed by the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), 100% of which is reused on-site, ensuring no liquid waste is released. Furthermore, a 200-kilogram Organic Waste Converter (OWC) system effectively treats 100% of wet waste into valuable manure within the facility.

Moreover, the implementation of dedicated stormwater channels has proven highly effective in facilitating the annual recharge of 4 million litres of rainwater into the aquifer.

With these extensive efforts, Sri Sivasubramaniya Nadar College of Engineering fully embodies its NetZero campus vision, striving to create an environmentally conscious and sustainable institution.

The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) Platinum certification is granted after a comprehensive evaluation of a site’s innovation in design and its environmental contributions across various categories. These include Site Selection & Planning, Water Conservation, Energy Conservation, Material Conservation, and Indoor Environmental Quality & Occupational Health. Sri Sivasubramaniya Nadar College of Engineering performed exceedingly on most of these parameters to earn the certificate.

IGBC is scheduled to host the 21st edition of ‘Green Building Congress’ 23, 24 & 25 November 2023 in Chennai Trade Centre, Chennai.
