University of Göttingen Ranks in Top Ten in Germany According to Humboldt Rankings 2023

The University of Göttingen is popular with international researchers. In the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation’s Humboldt Rankings 2023, it is placed ninth in Germany and first among universities in Lower Saxony with a total of 149 visiting researchers. In the ranking by subject area, the University of Göttingen scores highly in the life sciences, where it is ranked fifth with 32 fellowship recipients, and in the natural sciences, where it holds sixth place with 59 fellowship recipients.

The ranking shows how many academics have come to Germany with a fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in the past five years and where they chose to carry out their research. “We are very pleased about the global appeal of our University, which is also an endorsement for our internationalisation strategy,” says University President Professor Metin Tolan.

The Humboldt Ranking analyses the research visits of top international academics in Germany. In the overall ranking, the results are calculated by taking the number of Humboldt research fellows per 100 professorships at each university or research centre. The absolute numbers of research visits are included in the rankings for the humanities and social sciences as well as the life sciences, natural sciences and engineering. In total, the Foundation has funded 6,480 research visits over the past five years.
