University of Greenwich Staff Member Named Finalist in Science Communication Competition

The competition, called FameLab, is the largest, public facing, science communication competition and training programme in the world and is part of the Cheltenham Science Festival.

This year, the Southeastern regional final will be held at Gulbenkian Theatre and will be aired live on KMTV (Kent and Medway TV) and streamed globally. Participants have just three minutes each to communicate their research to a global audience and an expert panel of judges. The winner is the speaker who best demonstrates FameLab’s three C’s – Content, Clarity and Charisma.

Olaide Ogunsanya, an administrative assistant at the Natural Resources Institute at the University of Greenwich is one of the finalists. She said:

‘Competing in FameLab has been a thrilling journey. From the insightful training sessions to crafting our 3-minute videos, I’ve been continuously improving my science communication skills. I feel honoured and grateful that my video was selected, qualifying me for the final stage. I am eager to share a part of my research with the public.’

FameLab has run in over 40 countries across the world together with more than 200 local partner organisations. This global network brought together over 40,000 scientists and engineers who were able to engage with international audiences.

Professor Simon Harvey, the Associate Dean – Research and Knowledge Exchange in the Faculty of Engineering and Science at the University of Greenwich and a Professor in Evolutionary Biology is one of the judges at the competition final.
