University of Johannesburg Implements Facial Recognition for Secure Registration, a South African University First

In a significant stride towards ensuring secure and fraud-resistant registration processes, the University of Johannesburg (UJ) has integrated facial recognition technology into its registration process. This initiative marks the institution as the first in South Africa to employ facial recognition as a means of identity verification during the registration process.

The traditional methods of identity verification, such as sending in a copy of your ID document or submitting a certified copy for manual checks, are not infallible and can be susceptible to fraudulent activities. UJ’s adoption of facial recognition technology signifies its commitment to leveraging cutting-edge solutions for a safer, more efficient, and technologically advanced registration process.

Enhancing Security and Efficiency

The critical advantage of facial recognition as a verification process lies in its ability to accurately verify the identity of individuals by analysing unique facial features, thus virtually eliminating the risk of identity fraud. This not only enhances the security of the registration process but also contributes to the overall safety of the university community.

“New students registering this year will receive an SMS with instructions to confirm their identity through a quick and non-intrusive facial scan. This advanced level of authentication ensures that the person registering is indeed who they claim to be, offering a robust defence against identity-related fraud” says UJ’s Senior Director of Central Academic Administration, Dr. Tinus van Zyl.
