University of Tübingen steps up with networking for digital education

The University of Tübingen is driving forward digital education in the MINT subjects, together with other partners: on April 1, 2023, it will be part of one of the federally funded competence centers that promote the use of new technologies in the subjects mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology ( MINT) research and develop. The joint project “MINT-ProNeD” receives 7.5 million euros from the Federal Ministry of Research for a period of 2.5 years and networks nationwide teacher training locations and other institutions.

The core of the cross-state project network is a close cooperation between the five schools of education in Baden-Württemberg ( Binational School of Education Konstanz, Heidelberg School of Education , School of Education “Freiburg Advanced Center of Education” (FACE), Professional School of Education Stuttgart-Ludwigsburg , Tübingen School of Education ) and the center for teacher training of the Rhineland-Palatinate Technical University of Kaiserslautern-Landau.

In the project group, research-based advanced training and consulting concepts are being developed at various locations. These concepts are intended to support teachers in using digital technologies in an adaptive and process-oriented manner: With adaptive learning, the lessons are tailored as precisely as possible to the individual requirements of the individual students. This is intended to productively counteract the increasing heterogeneity of classes in the MINT subjects as well.

A total of three networks are set up. The Tübingen Center for Digital Education (TüCeDE) is responsible for the coordination: In the future, the “MINT network for advanced training” will offer research-based advanced training for adaptive teaching with digital media in the MINT subjects for all types of schools. In the “MINT network for teaching development”, a consulting concept is being created in the form of professional learning communities to support schools in developing teaching. In the “MINT Network Future Innovation Hub ” researchers examine innovative technologies such as virtual reality or artificial intelligence processes for their suitability for MINT teaching.

“One of our strengths is the close link between research and practice,” says project manager Professor Andreas Lachner from TüCeDE. “In MINT-ProNeD, nine universities and three non-university research institutes work together with the respective state institutes for teacher training and school development on a uniform further training and consulting concept.”

MINT-ProNeD stands for “Professional networks for the promotion of adaptive, process-related, digitally-supported innovations in MINT teacher training” and starts as one of six cross-site joint projects that are planned nationwide. The Federal Ministry of Research is funding the development of joint projects for digitally supported teaching in various departments with more than 200 million euros.
