Ural Federal University: The University Cyclotron Center is Ready for Operation

The Cyclotron Center for Nuclear Medicine at UrFU received Federal Service for Environmental, Technological and Nuclear Supervision (Rostechnadzor) conclusion on compliance with the requirements of the project documentation. Specialists checked the reconstructed complex on the basis of the new Canadian proton gas pedal TR-24.

“We conducted test launches, which confirm the cyclotron’s operational capability and the technical possibility to produce radiopharmaceuticals on the fluorine-18 isotope, which are used to diagnose oncological diseases,” said Sergey Kortov, First Vice Rector of UrFU.

The university started preparing the documents necessary to obtain permits and licenses for the delivery of radiopharmaceuticals to medical institutions. The Sverdlovsk regional oncological dispensary will open a nuclear medicine department.

The cyclotron center can become a production facility for other radiopharmaceuticals. In particular development of production of drugs for diagnostics of cardiovascular diseases is being discussed. It is also planned to develop new medical technologies using nuclear medicine and to work out standards of medical care for cancer patients.
