Week-long awareness programmes held by NSS, AMU Malappuram Centre

ALIGARH  : The National Service Scheme, Aligarh Muslim University Malappuram Centre chapter, Kerala organized a seven-day residential Special Camp at Snehayalam: Centre for Ability Empowerment, Eravimangalam, with a number of student volunteers coming from all over the country, who attended the camp, which was held with a motto, ‘Youth for Swachh Kerala’. The camp saw the creation of Sneharamam (garden of love) at the garbage dumping points with the help of Perinthalmanna Municipality.

Dr. Raghul V. Rajan, NSS Programme Officer hoisted the flag at the venue, while inaugurating the camp, Mr. Shaji P., Chairman, Perinthalmanna Municipality emphasized the relevance of NSS and its impact on students as well as society. Mr. Salam Athikurissi, Chairman, Pacific Valley Trust, Eravimangalam was the guest of honour.

The volunteers participated in an awareness parade and attended the Bharatiya Bhasha Sangam, with special language learning sessions on Malayalam, Bhojpuri and Kashmiri. The camp also marked the fit India movement and focused on spreading awareness for keeping fit with high degree of mental and physical health.

Ms. Gadha M. Das, Malappuram District Coordinator of Vimukthi Mission, Excise Department, Government of Kerala conducted an awareness class on life skills for prevention of substance abuse among youth. She sensitized the volunteers on the hazard of drug abuse.

The NSS Unit, in collaboration with the Legal Aid Clinic of the Centre, District Legal Service Authority (DLSA), Manjeri, and Taluk Legal Service Council (TLSC), Perinthalamanna conducted a legal awareness survey under the supervision of Dr. Naseema P.K., Chairperson, Legal Aid Clinic. Mr. Yahya T.K., Judicial First Class Magistrate, Perinthalmanna was the keynote speaker. Advocate Prasoonram R.S., Secretary, TLSC Perinthalmanna, shared insights into the contributions of unsung freedom fighters.

Mr. Venugopal A., Special Tahsildar and Senior ELC Coordinator led an awareness session at an Electoral Literacy Campaign (ELC) camp held under the Revenue Department of the State.

Mr. Binu B., Junior Superintendent, Malappuram Collectorate facilitated group activities using charts prepared by the department. Ms. Shagi P., Deputy Tahsildar, Perinthalmanna Taluk demonstrated the voting process using voting machine and VVPAT.

Mr. Pramod Sankar, Motor Vehicle Inspector, Perinthalmanna conducted the Road Safety Awareness session, highlighting various safety measures.

Mr. Ashok Kumar K.M., Senior Civil Police Officer, Cyber Crime, Malappuram engaged a session on Cyber Crime and Safety and elaborated on how to register complaints of cyber frauds.

Mr. Mohammed Shibin D., Fire and Rescue Officer, Perinthalmanna and Mr. Satheesh Kumar M., Officer, Kerala Home Guard conducted a session on disaster management, discussing various fire and rescue methods and precautions.

Dr. Sabeena P.S., Assistant Professor of Education spoke on economic aspects of Soap Making and provided a hands-on training with a supporting kit by Kerala Sasthra Sahithya Parishad, a popular science movement in Kerala.

Dr. Hamza V. K., Provost, Halls of Residence at the Centre, conducted a session on life skills for responsible citizens and the volunteers were initiated into a self SWOT analysis.

A mass cleaning exercise was conducted with the volunteers participating in collecting waste and garbage at the Sneharamam construction site, leveling the muddy patches and planting the saplings of bougainvillea. They also posted messages from Suchitwa Mission, Govt. of Kerala on charts at the waiting stands and celebrated Christmas as an interfaith syncretic measure.

The valedictory session, chaired by the Programme Officer, saw distribution of certificates of participation to the volunteers, while Ms. Sidra Fatima, Unit Secretary extended a vote of thanks and Mr. Nadim Akther, another Unit Secretary read out the report.
