Winners of the Interuniversity Olympiad in Listening to Oral Scientific Texts Announced

The Department of Foreign Languages in the Humanities on the basis of the Resource Center for Modern Methods of Teaching Foreign Languages of the Institute of Foreign Languages of PetrSU organized the I All-Russian Olympiad with international participation in listening to oral scientific texts of increased complexity.
More than 500 students of non-linguistic specialties from Petrozavodsk State University, Ivanovo State University of Chemistry and Technology (Ivanovo), Ural State Economic University (Yekaterinburg) took part in the Olympiad.

The ability to carry out full-fledged scientific communication in a foreign language is one of the most important requirements of the federal state educational standard, which implies both writing articles and annotations, and speaking at conferences. In addition, a modern student should fully understand the lectures of leading world scientists in English, as well as make detailed summaries of the information heard. In order to successfully carry out this kind of activity, a young scientist must have well-formed skills in listening to a foreign language scientific speech. It is the assessment of the levels of formation of the listening skill of oral authentic texts of an increased level of complexity that was the main goal of the Listening Olympiad,

As the contest work were asked to listen to a lecture of the former army chief of staff Gen. Nick Parker UK ( Nick Parker ) on security in today’s world ( ” Defence and Security in an Unstable World Defence and Security in an Unstable World ” ), read to them in 2017 at Gresham College, the first higher educational institution in London (1597). For an hour, students listened to an authentic lecture by a native British English speaker and wrote down notes. The conditions of students’ activity at the Olympiad were close to reality, therefore they contained an element of stress, which is expressed in the need to understand information after a single presentation, in conditions of limited time allotted for the task, in the absence of reliance on the original text and the possibility of attracting any additional reference resources … The main goal of the assignment was the most accurate understanding of an oral scientific text of increased complexity and its presentation by means of English in writing with a minimum number of lexical, grammatical, stylistic and semantic errors.

The students managed to adequately cope with the task and compete for the prizes.
