Ural Federal University: Ural School of Art Uniqueness Discussed at University

The Ural Federal University Ural Institute of Humanities hosted the All-Russian Scientific and Practical Conference “Spring Art History Readings – 2022”. More than 40 people from Russia and abroad took part in it. This year, the readings were timed to coincide with the 100th anniversary of the birth of Boris Pavlovsky, the founder of the Department of Art History and Museum Studies.

Graduates and lecturers of the Department of Art History and Museum Studies of the Ural Institute of Humanities revealed the features of the Ural School of Art History. They shared research findings that highlighted the role of the teacher and the influence of his or her scholarly interests on the next generation.

“A lot depends on where you studied, what traditions were taught to you. That is why I think the Department of Art History and Museum Studies, which I graduated from, became one of the most important art history centers between East and West. In the 1960s, it became possible to teach high-level specialists here. Nowadays, it is still successfully dealing with it,” said Marina Moskaluk, Doctor of Art History, Professor of Siberian Federal University.

Bachelors, Masters and PhD students made presentations in front of lecturers from the Department of Art History and Museum Studies, Museum staff, and Doctors of Science.

“The main thing is that a unique approach to the analysis and interpretation of works of art has been preserved, which in modern conditions allows comparisons and mutual influences in the art of Russia, the East and the West,” summarized Mikhail Shishin, an Academician of the Russian Academy of Arts.

The scientific event ended with the opening in the media library of the Ural Institute of Humanities of an exhibition in memory of Boris Pavlovsky, the founder of the Ural school of art history.
