Cancer awareness programme at ABK High School

ALIGARH : The ABK High School, Aligarh Muslim University organized a workshop on “Tobacco Hazards in India”, in collaboration with the Society for Cancer Awareness, to create awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco.

Dr. Mohsin Raza, a senior medical consultant, plastic surgeon, and Secretary, Society for Cancer Awareness talked about the hazards of tobacco and how its consumption is taking us toward the Cancer Tsunami in India.

Shared statistical data of school children consuming paan masala and cigarettes, he said that smoking causes over seven million deaths every year. Paan Masala is another big menace, particularly among low-income populations and students, which alone causes one million deaths every year.

Dr. Najma Qamar spoke about how the consumption of tobacco interferes with other medications and treatments and urged people to shun smoking in order to save their children from becoming passive smokers.

Dr. Shabih Siddiqi threw light on the psychological effects of tobacco and the role of peer pressure and bad company resulting in tobacco addiction among youth.

Dr. Dilshad Shamsi concluded the workshop, urging students to discuss their problems and issues with their parents and teachers.

Earlier, Principal, Dr. Samina welcomed the guest speakers and initiated the torch-lighting ceremony.

Mrs. Ghausia Iqbal, programme convener proposed the vote of thanks.
