The Ural Federal University co-organized the first International Week of Russian Language, Science and Culture, which was held from November 29 to December 5 in Mexico for students and teachers from Latin America with the support of Rossotrudnichestvo in Mexico. The International Week was held at the Autonomous Metropolitan University, Iztapalapa Unit: the university provided broadcasting of scientific conferences for undergraduate engineering and humanities students from other universities and countries. In total, 400 people participated in the week of Russian language, science and culture, 130 of whom were Bachelor’s students interested in enrolling in Master’s degree programs.

“Cooperation with Ural Federal University is very fruitful because it allows the Latin American public to be convinced of the quality of educational programs, high level of specialists, diverse and progressive methodology. The organization of such events and the involvement of students generates interest in the Russian language and Russian education in general in our region,” said Jorge Cieza de León Tuesta, Executive Director of ALAR.

The university held several courses for the participants of the International Week. One of them was a professional development course “Subject-Language Integrated Russian as a Foreign Language Teaching” for teachers from Russia and Mexico working with Latin American students. Students from Latin American universities attended online lectures by foreign scientists from UrFU. David Fernando Casas Torres, PhD student, gave a lecture in Spanish on “Finite Automata – Simple and Powerful”. Ebenezer Agbozo, Senior Lecturer at the Affiliated Department “Big Data Analysis and Methods of Videoanalysis”, organized a practical lecture in English on “Combining Machine Learning Technologies and Processes and Approaches to Implementing Developed Models in Business Processes Using Streamlit”.

The audience included students from the host university UAMI, as well as from other ALAR partner universities. Students from Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia, El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala joined the lectures. Among them were participants of the online summer school “Immersion in Graduate Studies: Computer Science and Management,” which was held as part of the Priority 2030 program.

“This is the second year that we have conducted online training with our partners from Latin America. We are interested in the specialties of different directions of the Master’s program. The implementation of short-term online programs is an opportunity for us to demonstrate in practice the quality of teaching at our university, the modern approach to learning and the willingness of teachers to work together and exchange ideas. Most of our online courses are in English, but we see interest from foreign students in learning the Russian language and culture, as well as a willingness to study in Russian-language programs,” notes Yana Vysotskaya, Head of the UrFU Division of International Educational Programs.

At the moment, 35 students from Latin American countries are studying Russian at the preparatory department for foreign students at UrFU, and about 120 students are studying at the university. 300 students from Mexico, Peru, Colombia, Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, Costa Rica, Honduras and Chile took part in the online school “Immersion in Master Studies: Computer Science and Management” this summer – 30 of them left the application for the Master’s programs for academic year 2023/24.

The organizer of this event is Latin American-Russian Association, a partner of the Ural Federal University.
